Early yesterday, an official at the home said three residents were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

By yesterday afternoon, 51 residents had been moved to the Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Beverly, where they are expected to stay for several days. The rest went home with family members or friends, according to a spokeswoman at Beverly Hospital.

Beverly Hospital and the state Department of Public Health helped find space at Essex Park, which had just closed one of its units for renovations. Northeast Health Systems, the owner of Beverly Hospital, provided beds and equipment.

"Fortunately, we were able to reopen it with the help of Beverly Hospital," said Jerry Labelle, director of operations for HealthBridge Management, which runs the nursing center. He is not sure how long the deaf residents will stay.

"We're anticipating up to six days right now," he said.
